Refugee’s Risk

Through this promised portal
no safety will be found
Foxes in the crosshairs
of gilded master’s hound

Risking all they venture
to ease their children’s plight
Risking all in searching
to end their endless flight

Coyotes prey upon them
below the river’s run
Eagles take the young ones
from not so welcome sun

Still they hear the calling
which lives within the heart
Still they cross the waters
a muse for all our art
