Tuesday’s Gone

I was sitting with my legs hanging out the car’s open door enjoying the wind. It was hot and I needed to stay as close to the moving air as I could. We had just passed through Birmingham and I had been hiding in the back of the car for 2 hours.
I tensed a bit as a lone figure passed by and then started towards my car. Gaining speed the man slowly caught the car and had a look that indicated he intended to join me. With a quick burst he jumped and grabbed the open door’s handle and swung his legs up into the opening.
I was impressed with the skill this interloper had used boarding my train; he was obviously no novice. The man rolled a couple times into the car and then came to perch on his knees facing me. I gave him a once over trying to quickly assess the nature of my new “mate”. After a few long seconds I began my inquisition.
“Nice move. Where ya headed?”
“East” he said, turning his gaze out the door. It was the obvious answer someone gives when they are not interested in conversation. As it was my car though, I continued.
“Why’d you jump my car? Plenty others available”, I had the right to ask. He turned his gaze back to me and after a second responded.
